Effective Couples Counseling / Communication Tools That Work

Enhance your intimate relationships by improving communication & addressing underlying issues. Experience more relaxed & joyful relationships. Please call us if you need help: (415) 413-8330

In this sometimes hectic and demanding life relationship with a loved one can offer sanctuary in the form of love, emotional and material support, as well as space for re-generation.

Relationship can also challenge us in ways that can be scary and stressful, demanding our attention in ways that feel distracting or painful. Intimacy brings vulnerability and the same powerful force that pulls us into relationship can expose us to feelings of anger, anxiety, sadness and shame as well as of love, joy, nourishment and support.

Often we lose trust – in ourselves and in our partner. Sometimes this comes as a result of stressors in our environment that simply wear us down; like ill-health, loss of a loved one or losing a job. Sometimes un-expressed or un-heard feelings around hopes, wants and needs can lead to unconsciously harmful behaviors such as affairs, workaholic patterns, and substance abuse.

At Tam Counseling we focus on re-building trust through developing emotional safety, improving communication and setting clear goals. Along the way we introduce tools that can help re-establish and maintain positive ways of relating. Your relationship is our client and we work hard to support each partner through maintaining balance in the counseling process.

Our work is inspired by the work of John Gottman, Sue Johnson and Harville Hendrix and we have extensive experience in working with couples (straight and gay) on a variety of issues such as: pre-marital counseling; issues of identity and diversity; parenting challenges; life transitions; affairs; and divorce.

Intimate relationship provides us with a tremendous opportunity for personal growth and happiness. Irrespective of the ultimate outcome – couples therapy can provide invaluable support and often results in lowered anxiety and stress levels, and a better quality of life for all participants.
